Park City’s favorite mountain bike race - Tour De Suds

Posted by Sean Matyja on Thursday, September 7th, 2017 at 2:50pm.

Many moons ago local dedicated mountain bikers would celebrate the end of summer and the upcoming fall season by riding a 7 mile stretch between City Park and Gaurdsmans Pass. In order to make the 2,700 verticle incline race more enticing, said riders would park a keg at the top of their climb. This annual event became the now known Tour De Suds. And to this day, even 38 years later, the event remains very much the same. This laid back and cheerful race attracts both competitive and non-competitive riders of all ages (kids under the age of 17 ride for free).

Finishing times range from forty seven minuets to just over two and a half hours. The only aspect that is consistent in all the riders is the hilarious and often over the top costumes worn by the riders. There is nothing more fun than seeing a hot dog ride a bike up Main Street on a beautiful fall Sunday morning, this I personally guarantee!

Waiting at the the top of Guardsman Pass for all riders is a party (sponsored by Skullcandy and Red Rock Brewery) which provides even more motivation to complete the race. Along the way if needed a shot of whiskey can be obtained shortly before the finish line for that extra jolt some might need.

After finishing this not-so-serious race you can continue celebrating at City Park where festivities continue with lunch (including beverages of the carbonated sort), a killer opportunity drawing, and costume contest and awards. The Tour des Suds is the zaniest mountain bike party in the west!

This unique setting and vibe of the event is something that can’t be found in many races elsewhere. So set aside time on Sunday September, 17th to participate or just watch the craziness that is Tour De Suds.
