Float the Scenic Provo River near Park City Utah

Are you looking for some outdoor fun for the entire family? Floating Utah's beautiful Provo River is a great way to beat the heat. The river meanders down a stunning canyon with Mount Timpanogos as a backdrop. It's one of the closest places to river rafting near Park City. The season typically runs from May through September.

There are numerous ways to float the river; you can raft, kayak, paddleboard, or tube your way down. High school and college-age kids tend to enjoy tubing more than other age groups. With tubing, you are more exposed to the chilly water and scratches from twigs and branches that line the shores. The inflatable raft is a better option if you have a group with older grandparents or younger kids.

A float trip down the Provo River is super easy to coordinate. There are a few gear rental outfitters and shuttle service providers. High Country Adventure runs tours seven days a week and can make planning the day an effortless task. Shuttles leave on the hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and every 30 minutes during busier times. The typical float time is 90 – 120 minutes, depending on the seasonal flows. Once you check in, they drive your group up river to the launch site. The river float trips start below Deer Creek Reservoir and finish at a private take-out and parking area at Vivian Park and Frazier Park. We suggest booking a reservation in advance online.

Floating the river is a family-friendly activity that is great for kids aged three and up. The water can be cold, so plan accordingly. Wear shoes that are ok to get completely wet, as you'll be stepping through the water at numerous locations. Flip-flop sandals are highly discouraged as they will get lost. Bring a cooler for snacks and drinks. And of course, do not forget sunglasses and sunscreen.

If the Provo River is too tame, you might try the Weber River. Weber Canyon is a great introduction to whitewater rafting with many small rapids and a few medium-sized depending on the time of year. This 3-hour whitewater stretch near Park City takes you through Weber Canyon and is typically open from June to Labor Day.
