Located
in Summit County, Park City is one of two major resort towns
in Utah - the other being nearby Moab (famous for it’s
slick rock mountain biking trail). Park City is considered
to be part of the “Wasatch Back” and is within
only 20 minutes to the Salt Lake City metropolitan area. Once
considered a ski vacation town, and a summer weekend retreat
for nearby Salt Lake City resident’s, Park City has now
transformed to a year-round, full-time residence for many people
looking to improve the quality of their life. People do not
live in Park City because they have to, they live here because
they want to. With such a strong sense of community, there
is no better place to raise a family and meet life-long friends
who also seek to live in a community where enjoying the mountain
lifestyle is the foremost priority.
Park City is home to three major ski resorts: Park
City Mountain Resort, Deer
Valley Resort, and The
Canyons® Resort. The
Park City and Deer Valley ski resorts were the major locations
for ski and snowboarding events at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
In addition to our three world class ski resorts right here
in town, visitors and residents enjoy the close proximity to
8 other great ski resorts all within an hours drive. They include:
Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, Solitude, Snowbasin, Powder
Mountain,
Wolf Mountain, and Sundance. Additionally, Park City is the
main location and now permanent headquarters for the renowned
Sundance Film Festival, home of the United States Ski Team,
the Utah Olympic Park that includes the bobsled / skeleton
/ luge track, and training facilities for alpine and inverted
ski jumping. Outdoor-oriented businesses such as Backcountry.com
and Rossignol / DC Shoes / Quicksilver / Roxy have moved their
headquarters to Park City. The city has many upscale luxury
national retailers, clubs, bars, and restaurants, and has nearby
reservoirs, hot springs, forests, and hiking and biking trails.
Park City is also home to many currently training and retired
world-class and Olympic athletes.
Population
Park City’s population is approximately 7,000. The surrounding
area of Summit County has a population of 26,500.
Elevation
Within the city limits, Park City’s altitude varies from 6,720 to 8,460
ft. above sea level. The summit of Park City Mountain Resort's Jupiter Peak is 10,000 ft. Deer
Valley reaches 9,570 ft. and The Canyons® Resort is at 9,990 ft.
Climate:
There is no better climate than what we enjoy here in Park City!
Park City’s winter climate begins in late October and sometimes can last
til June, with temperatures ranging from 24º to 33º F. However, once
in a while it can dip below zero. Summer temperatures rarely reach beyond the
mid 80’s and night are cool. The average snowfall is 143 inches in town
and 350 inches in the resorts. The nearby Cottonwood Canyon resorts of Solitude,
Brighton, Snowbird and Alta receive an average of over 500 inches of snow each
year!
History:
In 1868 silver was discovered in the Park City area by soldiers who climbed over
the mountains from Big Cottonwood Canyon. During a snowstorm, they marked the
outcropping with a bandana and returned to find it in the spring. The first
mine was named Flagstaff. The silver rush lasted 20 years and Park City (originally
called Parley’s Park City) was incorporated as a town in 1884. In 1898
there were over 10,000 people in Park City, more than today. Park City prospered
as a mining town until the late 40’s and was declared a ghost town in
1954, although there were 1,150 “ghosts” actually living here.
In 1958 United Park City Mines began exploring the idea of turning the company’s
land into a ski area and in 1963 Treasure Mountain Resort (now Park City Mountain
Resort) was opened. Lift tickets were just $3.50. Today Park City is a thriving
resort community with three major ski resorts and 64 buildings listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. To learn more about Park City’s
